How we work with packaging at Tytex – and why it matters

By Ivana Kozlai Lauridsen, Expert within Packaging Solutions, Tytex

Packaging as a strategic discipline

When people think of medical textiles, they naturally focus on the fabrics and clinical performance. But in my daily work, I see more of the essential role packaging plays in product safety, compliance, brand identity, and user experience.

As Tytex being both a contract manufacturer and producer of own brands, we operate in a landscape where packaging must meet regulatory standards, support logistics, and align commercially with market expectations. My responsibility is to navigate all these elements and guide our partners in making informed decisions. Thus, at Tytex, packaging is not an afterthought. It is a strategic, technical discipline that influences how our and our partners’ products travel; how they are perceived, and ultimately how they perform for both patients, users and professionals.

Compliance & safety: The foundation of every packaging decision

One of the first things I consider in any project is material, sustainability and compliance. Packaging must align with ISO 13485, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, MDR (EU 2017/745), CE marking, FDA registration, and other relevant regulations. It carries essential labeling, protects the product, and ensures traceability and documentation structure. In the medical device world, packaging errors are not trivial—they can compromise patient safety, regulatory approval, or logistics of integrity.

A unified and modern visual identity for Carefix® Breast Care

With our Carefix® Breast Care packaging revision launching right now, we are upgrading materials, modernizing design elements, and starting to create unified aesthetic appearance across our brands. The transformation includes replacing photographs with clean product illustrations, embedding the size guide on the back label, introducing QR codes for expanded information, and upgrading the IFU format from booklets to leaflets. The goal is to get more consistent, premium, and user-friendly experience.

Our technical backbone: The collaboration with Alena

We design the packaging in Denmark but for us to see all elements in implementation I closely collaborate with Alena Macková, who serves as the technical engine behind our packaging decisions. While I assess design, materials, compliance, communication elements, and user experience, Alena validates technical feasibility. She evaluates how each packaging concept performs on the production line and how it impacts carton counts, outer cartons, pallet configurations, stabilization, storage efficiency, and transport costs.

Together, we secure a seamless bridge between concept and operational reality.

Portfolio simplification and practical efficiency

Together with Alena and the broader team, we recently carried out an extensive project to simplify packaging across the Carefix® and Corsinel® ranges (Corsinel® launch date to be confirmed soon). By analyzing product dimensions, logistics data, and packing line requirements, followed by thorough testing, we streamlined the portfolio 13 boxes to 2 to two box sizes. The result: Reduced complexity, lower environmental impact, and improved cost efficiency. Next step is to investigate how we can supplement with bags. Stay tuned for more information in 2026.

Understanding the product journey before choosing materials

Before selecting materials, I map out the complete “life story” of the product: Who will handle it, how it will be transported, which markets it will enter, and how it will be stored.

Only when this is fully understood do we explore materials, such as premium GC1 cardboard, recycled GD2 paperboard, recycled LDPE bags, and other eco-responsible alternatives. Sustainability is a priority, but it must align with functional demands and regulatory requirements. For example, sugarcane-based LDPE is not always suitable, and it is my responsibility to communicate such limitations openly.

Design, label architecture & digital integration

As already indicated, packaging design is not just a matter of aesthetics. It must support compliance, clarity, and user navigation. I collaborate closely with our Marketing, Compliance, and Quality teams to define what belongs on the box; what should move to the IFU; how QR codes should be integrated, and how to build a label architecture that is intuitive in every market. The move toward digital information access (such as QR-based IFUs) is an area where packaging will continue to evolve.

Testing & validation: Turning concepts into reliable solutions

Every packaging solution undergoes real-world testing: Folding performance, sealing, carton stability, pallet configuration, transport simulations, and user handling. This is the moment where theoretical ideas change into real, reliable packaging, and where Alena’s technical calculations ensure that every solution performs flawlessly on the shop floor.

For me, the most rewarding moment is when I look at the packaging and can be proud of what we’ve created both from an aesthetic point of view and user-friendliness. When we get positive feedback from our partners, we know we are evolving in the right direction.

Supporting our private label partners

Our Private Label & OBL partners depend on us not only for manufacturing, but for ensuring that their products enter the market safely, professionally, and competitively. Packaging is a vital part of that promise. We help with material selection, design, compliance documentation, sustainability considerations, and cost optimization strengthening both our partners’ brands and our own.

Conclusion: Packaging as professional craftsmanship

For me, packaging is not a mechanical task. It is a craft that requires precision, creativity, and a willingness to collaborate across departments and markets. With strong teamwork, especially with Alena and our colleagues in Purchasing and Product Engineering in Slovakia, we are able to deliver packaging solutions that are compliant, sustainable, visually appealing, and operationally intelligent.

Moving Forward Together

Packaging development never stands still. We are constantly exploring new materials, optimizing existing formats, reducing complexity, and enhancing both sustainability and the overall customer experience. The 2025–2026 updates for Carefix® and Corsinel® reflect this ongoing commitment and are only the beginning of what we aim to achieve.

I am looking forward to continuing to work closely with our partners on their packaging solutions while also developing our own Tytex packaging to be even smarter, more sustainable, and more aligned with the needs of tomorrow’s healthcare landscape.
